The Common Ranking System
Ranking systems seem like an easy going system, but it really isn’t when the competitors in the ranking system comes along. This is where the “common” in ranking system comes along. Whether it be a friend or foe trying to rank higher, no one likes to be beaten, and incorporating a system to cause readers to act such a way is a great method to help increase cooperation and repetitiveness. A simple ranking system can become really repetitive once the competition starts, and you can see how it goes. Here are some examples of some successful ranking systems that were incorporated.
- The simple Google page ranking metric system. No one can forget the cruel ranking system that Google has set up to indulge webmasters to make a better quality blog and to increase repetitiveness for the word pagerank. Now whenever you see the word pagerank, webmasters will go over board.
- Technorati’s top 100 blogs. No one can forget the name and brand Technorati has set for it self ever since their ranking system went booming and it became the center of all blogs and became the blogosphere. Not only does their ranking system cause blog owners to act a certain way, it helps to measure a blog’s popularity, thus making blog owners want to make a better blog for other blog owners to want to link to them.
- Blogs like ours, have incorperated a top commenter widget, designed to increase readers to comment and to publicly give recognition to those who contribute to the community. It was designed for a certain objective, increase commentating of readers, and it does what it was designed to do. This is a great example of how a simple ranking system can effect a person’s actions.
Think of a ranking system like the cookie jar that teachers used to always incorporate. The better behaved you are, the more likely you are to get that cookie right? It works the same way in the Internet as well. It is a simple concept that has surprising results. Try it for your self.

I love the idea of a simple system for ranking because it would smooth the process and allow marketers to narrow their focus on running their business. However, the reality is that the marketplace is too diverse to provide that kind of stability. Plus if Big G even thought of creating a kinder and more consistent process it would generate enough Twitter traffic to shut down the Internet for a week.
