Social networking is often looked upon as a place for self promotion and that sort of stuff, especially for typical webmasters who own their own blog or business. What does the term “Social networking” site spell out to you? The most common mistake that webmasters pursue when joining any social network, is that they simply self promote. If they knew how to best utilize a social networking site, they would say to themselves, “Hey there bub, your about 10 steps ahead.” Let us look up the definition of social networking in Wikipedia and remind us of what a social networking site really is.
A social network is a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, ideas, financial exchange, friendship, sexual relationships, kinship, dislike, conflict or trade.

Here is a diagram of social networking and viral marketing working at it’s best from Wikipedia. It almost looks as if we were ants, doesn’t it? Simply spreading the word of the queen ant (The news) by viral.

How to Best Utilize Any Social Network
Social networking should be in any serious Internet marketer’s collection. Any marketer that says social networking traffic is useless is simply missing out. I have seen some webmasters shine from it, and I have seen some shine not so much. and you know why that is?
The webmasters who best utilize social networking traffic are the people that are creative and not self promoting. Social networking sites are full, literally packed of millions of people looking for people they can share stories with and spread the word on. They are looking for people they have similar interests to, and if you have a site somewhat similar to what people are interested in, why not join the gang and share some fun stories? Of course you can somewhat promote your own products/web pages, but be knowledgeable that no one likes someone who is repetitive and only socializing for self promoting. That brings us to building a natural looking profile.
Building a Natural Looking Social Networking Profile
Building a natural looking social networking profile is simple, really. All your really doing, is mimicking what any normal person, non-webmaster, would do. Digg, Stumble, Mixx other people’s stuff that you find interesting and that fits under your particular crowd. Your objective is to look for friends that have similar interests with you and your website and have a mutual adaptation to both becoming friends. Even though you are a webmaster, it doesn’t mean you cannot self promote. Just don’t do it all the time. One must strike a balance between self promoting and stumbling other people’s stuff.
