Book Review: Mind Over Money

Although I am only 34 pages into the book, I must say that this is so far a great read that I would personally recommend to anyone looking to find what is their problem psychologically on money habits like spending too much or vice versa. Brad Klontz & Ted Klontz the authors of Mind Over Money walks us through all the psychological human behaviors that we see in our selves and explains why most people are not happy even if they strike rich.

Mind Over Money first starts off talking about everyday financial issues such as spending, psychological issues, childhood issues, and much more on how they undoubtedly influence our idea of what is considered successful and what is not. For the most part,Brad Klontz  & Ted Klontz explains that in order for one to be happy, he/she must feel accomplished about their achievements and that it is human to go through a financial/identity crisis at anytime. He also begins to explain how addictions and bad habits are the result of personal experiences and that everyone has faults and make mistakes. And that these issues are indeed curable. He takes into consideration that balance of happiness and wealth is key to prosperity and good living.

This book also talks into further depth on how money can be a temporary “fix” to most people whenever there is a difficult situation. Here is an example of this from the book. I’ll recall the passage by memory because I never really purchased the book; just had a glimpse at it while I had some extra time at Barnes & Nobles. I plan on picking it up the next time I drop by Barnes & Nobles.

I recall the incident going the lines of this: The husband gets a coronary artery bypass surgery to later be found that the operation was benign. They go off to celebrate and basically use all their retirement money to later find that their gracious money is gone when they are close to retirement.

In this example the authors of Mind Over Money highlights that money is a temporary solution that can go out of hand from emotional urges and begins to talk about all the psychological reasons why things gotten out of hand and how things could have better played out.

Mind Over Money talks about sustaining money and how not to become a hardcore spender, however, it also talks about the interesting insecurity that many people have who are custom to saving too much as well. The feeling of insecurity that that one day they might go into a financial collapse anytime. Even if they had all the money in the world in their savings account, they would still feel the need to prepare for that particular event. This goes way beyond normal frugality – we’re looking at a person who doesn’t tip, checks their accounts balances multiple times per hour, and will gladly pass you the bill every time you dine together. In other words, they’re so tight that they become a social leper.

The reason why I recommend this book to my readers in particular is because it will help find a better you that you will be happy with. Everyone has different goals and expectations and money is one of those expectations. Mind Over Money helps you conquer the better you to having a more luxurious relaxing life and sets expectations to your wantings. Mind Over Money sets you free from feeling disappointed from your self as a sole independent provider and understands people have families to raise. It also understands that in order for someone to make money and be happy, one must understand the fundamental issues that is causing the anxiety most people have. If anything at all, this book teaches you how to be a better person and challenges your self to do better no matter what circumstance you are in and teaches how you can be content by twisting the situation the other way around.
