Advantages of Working Online to Having a Day Job

There are many advantages and disadvantages to both working online and having a day job. Many of the reasons why most people would like working online from their home computer, may be the flexible schedules, ability to stay at home with family, and for many other various reasons. On the other hand, some might feel that by not having a day job, they may be sacrificing social skills, connections, and much more that they feel they may not be obtainable anywhere else. Here in this article, I will not exactly point out a particular path I believe is right for you, rather just spill out all the basic sacrifices and benefits of choosing either one of these options.

Working Online

  1. Flexible hours
  2. More time with friends/family at home
  3. In some cases, may make you feel that you are the boss
  4. In some cases, get paid for how much you do
  5. May encourage learning more about working softwares & online tools
  6. Great for your ego and telling your friends
  7. May give you an idea of being your own boss
  8. No need to work up early in the morning or even pay for gas to get to work
  9. It is accessible almost anywhere there is a computer with Internet access.

Negatives

As goes with the benefits of working online, some of the points made can even contribute to the negative sides of working online.

Advertisements

  1. May be distracting with friends and families around
  2. May be harder to focus
  3. May require more knowledge about working certain tools
  4. Requires organization
  5. Lets face it, some people like to murmur figures that they were making impressively at one point. This can lead to a lot of problems of trying to live up to your word especially if it isn’t something you are always making. Don’t let your ego get ahead of you.
  6. In most cases, working online may reek bad habits like not exercising regularly or going out
  7. Tasks may feel old and redundant really fast. Realize, you must be committed.

Having a Day Job

  1. Better for life skills
  2. Can help encourage meeting new friends and making new connections that may last you a lifetime
  3. Have a broader idea of the world
  4. Not as redundant as tasks from working online
  5. Can be great for your social skills
  6. No need to worry about anything except doing your job well
  7. It can be fun in some cases, but not all

Negatives

  1. In some cases, fixed pay
  2. You are not your own boss
  3. Forced to follow a strict schedule
  4. Must wake up early and in most cases, pay for transportation
  5. May be hard to find a job, especially at this point in time.
  6. Be prepared to be dedicated and sacrifice hours of your life to fulfill your duty
  7. You take orders from your boss

I’ve been working online for almost a year now. At first, I was just happy that I’d discovered a legitimate way of making money online, even though I wasn’t making much. Then I got accepted by Demand Studios and my income skyrocketed! I love working at home because of the independence. I never liked the whole boss thing. I rarely had good bosses, so it’s wonderful to be away from all that. I agree with your list, except for me being around family more is actually a negative rather than a positive. That’s because I’m not married with kids, but living at home to save money for a house. My Mom’s not so bad, but my brother is pretty irritating to live around. I love not getting up in the morning and the gas and lunch savings, plus being tied into those ridiculous hours. I can make what I need in 1/4 of the time. It’s true it’s good for the ego or status. I haven’t even tapped into the accessibility factor yet, but I did write a blog post about the idea of traveling and freelancing because WiFi is everywhere, so the possibilities are amazing. It’s true that tasks can feel old and redundant, but they are like that on a regular job too. The key is to finding a schedule that is motivating. I’ve devised a schedule that makes me feel like I’m not even working at all! Best of all worlds. Thanks!

Just not having to drive is enough for me to want to work more at home. I’m slowly transitioning away from work as my blogs and businesses continue to take off. I drive nearly 2 hours each day just from traffic. Combine this with getting up an hour early and I’ve already wasted a large chunk of my day moving around.

    Soon……

I would argue against a lot of your negatives of running a business and also a lot of the positives about working a job!

I recently did a post on my blog outlining what I thought were the different benefits of starting a business online. Start a business online.

    I hope this helps!

    Enjoy!

I’m with Murlu on this. Don’t quite your day job until you get things lined up. Even then I think Hugh MacLeod has a great point that the tension between the day job and the sexy job is what creates energy for your projects.

  • http://www.makemoneyonline4idiots.com Working Online

Working online is pretty hard. I mean, not just because of the difficult learning curve involved in learning the ‘business’ but also because you have to be really disciplined to work for yourself. This was difficult for me for a long time – in fact, until I decided to stop working at home (I have 3 little kids who demand a lot of attention and distracted me a lot) and got a small office that I shared with a couple of other people who were working at home at the time. It’s something I’d highly recommend. Between the three of us we don’t pay a lot of rent and overheads and more than make up for the extra expense by having a private place for working online without any distractions.

Hello. Just to say that I need people hosting some info in different sites. To achieve that, I pay $1.00 usd for every referral you get for me. They´ll have to signup for a free (100%) web hosting provider.
Also, the site must have at least 5 unique visitors per week. The next week the visitors may be the same, no problem with that, but 5 different ones.
If the sites survive for 3 months (keep active), you receive $10.00 per site after that time.
    Paymentes via Paypal only.
Contact me at acostam71 & gmaildotcom

    Good luck!

Yes, working at home has its pros and cons. I would like to work from just home if I would be able to generate that much income that would be sufficient for my living. I find it too difficult to work under any other person. Self employment would give enough satisfaction to me. I am looking for the day when I would not be having any boss. I will be my own boss.

I would still take online work full time over your traditional 9 to 5 anyday.

    You control your own pay
    you set your own hours
You are your own CEO which is a pretty cool feeling
Noone telling you what to do big bonus
Once you get good at Internet marketing the sky is the limit great feeling
sense of accomplishment I am a self made millionaire how would that make you feel to say those words to yourself? Probably pretty damn good…
    Save on gas
Work where you want when you want as long as you have an Internet connection you can work on the beach. How cool is that?

My biggest motivating factor is to shut everyone up who says you cannot do it or laugh at you. Now who’s laughing after you pull it off? Thats priceless by itself!

    Great post!
